Home fires remain one of the most serious safety threats families face. Extinguisher use is only appropriate when all of these conditions are met: the fire is small (contained to the point of origin, no larger than a wastebasket), you have a clear exit behind you, the correct extinguisher is immediately available, and you have a basic understanding of how to use it. If any of these conditions are not met—if the fire is growing, if the room is filling with smoke, if you are unsure—get out, close doors behind you to slow the fire’s spread, and call emergency services from outside the building. No property is worth risking your life.

Room-by-Room Safety

Bedrooms

Bedrooms deserve special fire safety attention because occupants are asleep and may have reduced awareness of a developing fire. Install a smoke detector inside every bedroom—not just in the hallway. Keep bedroom doors closed at night: a closed door can significantly slow the spread of fire and smoke and reduce temperatures in the room, buying crucial escape time. Avoid charging phones or devices under pillows, where heat cannot dissipate. Do not use electric blankets with frayed cords or while sleeping unless specifically designed for all-night use.

Garage and Outdoor Spaces

Garages commonly contain multiple fire hazards: gasoline, oil, paint, solvents, and other flammable liquids, along with power tools, vehicles, and lawn equipment. Store flammable liquids in approved containers away from heat sources. Never run a generator, vehicle, or fuel-powered equipment inside an attached garage—even with the door open, carbon monoxide buildup can reach dangerous levels quickly.
